You may view all current Editorial Board members on our website. Board members come from a wide range of countries and public health specialties.
Who can publish in the Journal?
We encourage public health scientists and researchers from all backgrounds and specialties to submit. There are two publishing tracks that govern submissions to JAPH:2. Publishing as a non-member of the Academy of Public Health.Manuscripts submitted through the first track must have at least one Academy of Public Health member as co-author. These submissions are not desk-rejected and will always be published alongside accompanying public peer reviews, where applicable. Manuscripts submitted by Academy members are immediately slated for publication and peer review. The only circumstance in which a member's manuscript may be rejected is if the submission does not fall within our Scope, or adequately within any of our five Article Types.Manuscripts submitted through the second track, wherein no author is a member of the Academy of Public Health, will be reviewed for suitability for publication in accordance with standard practice by both the editors and peer reviewers. Manuscripts accepted from non-member authors will receive public peer reviews where applicable, like all other JAPH papers. Non-member papers must also be in accordance with our scope and article type criteria.Academy membership eligibility is as stated in the Academy Bylaws - “Members of the Academy shall be prominent and well published scientists in the field of public health, including but not limited to epidemiology, environmental health, occupational health, behavioral health, pharmacoepidemiology, community health, global health, disease surveillance, biostatistics, medical informatics, health services, health policy, health economics, medical ethics, nutritional science, and public health education.”The Academy is governed by a Board of Directors, as described in the Bylaws. What are the publishing criteria for JAPH?
The journal is a novel peer-reviewed science publishing platform founded to provide a forum for research and scholarly communication without the gatekeeping that all too often hampers innovative work or challenges to established dogmas. It was founded to provide a forum for new ideas and critiques of established notions, as well as original research. Thus, members of the Academy can publish any article they wish to submit in the journal, subject only to editorial screening for adherence to guidelines and for relevance to public health. Non-members may submit papers for publication that will be subject to editorial and reviewer discretion, like more traditional academic publications.
Research Articles are peer reviewed and authors have the option to revise in light of reviewer and editorial comments. Nonetheless, articles are not rejected based on the reviews. Instead, final reviews are published with the revised paper, and the authors have the option to publish a response alongside the reviews. Readers will thus be able to see the published article together with the final reviews and author responses, so they may judge the merits of the article in light of complete materials.
The requirement that at least one author be an Academy member is to prevent the journal from being flooded with submissions unrelated to public health and to provide quality assurance.
Who are the staff of the Journal?
Dr. Andrew Noymer, Associate Professor of Population Health and Disease Prevention at the University of California, Irvine, is our editor-in-chief. Our managing editor is Charlie Tidmarsh.
Is the Journal indexed on major indexing platforms?
Indexing is an essential component in the success of any academic journal. For our current application statuses, please see the Indexing page. Our ISSN is 3067-6614 (Online).
How much does it cost to publish in JAPH?
To support our Open Access model and generous reviewer honoraria (see the Peer Review Guidelines), JAPH collects a modest Article Processing Charges (APC). We do so in a unique way, with the goal of being maximally inclusive and accessible to all prospective authors.
As an Academy member, your first submission each year is free. Each subsequent submission during a 1-year period from the date of your first will be subject to the following fee structure:
- Research Articles - $2000
- Literature Syntheses - $2000
- External Article Reviews - $0
- Histories of Public Health - $2000
- Perspectives - $500
As a nonprofit, the entirety of these proceeds go toward supporting the journal’s work and ability to pay reviewers. Please note that we offer further waivers on a case-by-case basis. If you are not with a research institution that can finance the publication of your work, or if you are unable to pay for any other reason, indicate this when submitting in order to receive a waiver.
Your Journal has a very different approach to Peer Reviews, and pays Reviewers an honorarium. How is your approach different, and how do you afford the honorarium?
We are an open peer review journal, and respect the vital contribution reviewers make to science in several ways:
a) Your review will be published as soon as we receive it, prominently located alongside the article under review. In order to grant the most possible agency and flexibility to our reviewers, all reviewers for JAPH may chose whether their review is published anonymously or signed. Readers will be able to access the full chain of discourse surrounding our published articles at all times. In order to disseminate scientific work rapidly, JAPH will often publish research and other submissions that require peer-review before the reviews are received, and the reviews are added to the website on the Article page immediately upon receipt.
b) Peer review is the added value that scientific journals provide compared to preprint depositories. To acknowledge your vital work as a reviewer, we are pleased to provide a $500 honorarium for each peer-review. We are a non-profit publisher and are able to accommodate these generous honoraria through our modest article processing fees (APCs).
c) Every review receives its own DOI, and is therefore citable.
