As with most open-access journals, the Journal of the Academy of Public Health has a publication fee. Unlike most journals, a substantial part of the fee is used as honoraria for the scientists who write the open peer-reviews, as they are the ones providing the added value when research is published in a journal rather than on a preprint server.
For authors who do not have research grants or institutional funds that can be used for publication fees, there are various free submission options described below.
Standard Publication Fees
Research Articles: US$ 2,000
Literature Syntheses: US$ 2,000
History of Public Health: US$ 2,000
Perspectives: US $500
External Article Reviews: US$ 0
Free Submissions
- Each Academy member may submit one research article, one history of public health and one literature synthesis for free.
- Each Academy member may submit one perspective for free each year.
We encourage those with available research funds to use those and to pay the standard publication fee, to save their free submissions for later use.
Using Per-Review Honoraria for Publication Fees
The $500 honoraria received for writing peer-reviews for research articles and literature syntheses that were submitted by other scientists may be saved in the system and used to cover future publication fees.
Waiving of the Publication Fee
If none of the authors have professional grant or institutional funds available to pay the publication fee, please explain the situation in a note to the editors. They will then wave the publication fee on a case-by-case basis.
